Brereton FC 2 - Shelfield Utd FC 16 - 9th September 2018
Almost a non-entity of a game after an aggressive first 20 minutes was rewarded with an opening goal for Tricky and Gricey, before the unplayable Reuben scored four to settle the game before the break.
Pleasingly nine players scored including debut goals for the impressive Alex and Josh complimented by Renno's hat-trick and a late penalty from Chopper.
The contest did present extended game time for the whole squad, which rewarded Cole and Liam with deserved goals to boost their claim for starts.
With such an experienced and well stocked squad the game was really a free-hit and sterner tests lie ahead, but the continued development of these boys should make us competitive with continued support from our excellent parents and supporters.
Too many good performances to pick just one so the man of the match accolade goes to the whole squad.
Shelfield Utd FC 7 - Walsall Wood FC 2 - 16th September 2018
Our first home game of the season demonstrated the depth and quality of our squad with three goalscorers and an accomplished team performance.
Due to injuries and other absences we were down to the bones with players having to dig deep in new positions, but our super boys led by Alfie, Mowey, Boulton and Bowen at the back rarely looked troubled.
A relatively flat five in the middle protected the defense throughout and further complimented the attacking play with Renno hitting the bar twice and Dominick scoring a brace on his first outing this term. Out wide a combination of Cole, Gricey and the impressive Alex gave us great balance with and without the ball.
Early goals change games and again Tricky scored the first and worked tirelessly throughout, but in Reuben we have a goal-machine that for the second consecutive game scored four to take the game away from our opponents.
Really pleasing to see players develop, in particular Jack, Alex, Gricey and Cole and whilst training wasn't the best this week it is getting harder to pick the starting 11 for games.
Final word has to be for our man of the match. Zac Beech who really has complimented our team since joining at Christmas. Week in he battles above his stature and provides a great outlet for our attacking players.
Shelfield Utd FC 0 - Penkridge 4 - 23rd September 2018
Certainly we didnt deserve to win but to lose by 4 is hard to take as the Penkridge keeper made 4 great saves to keep us out.
For very long spells throughout both halves we kept and moved the ball very well and created numerous chances, but defensively we gave two sloppy goals and had we gone in at half-time we would have been happy. Regrettably two poor goals as a result of disastrous team defending took the game away from us. More lessons are learnt in defeat and again we were good enough for long spells. Our MotM was Josh Easty who played beautifully in the middle of the park.
Streetly FC 0 v Shelfield Utd FC 8 - 30th September 2018
A rare but deserved clean sheet for our impressive defenders and goalkeeper that gave us a platform to go on and score good goals and dominate the game. A really slow start and a three goal lead at half time didnt represent the control we had on the game that in the end was rewarded with an emphatic win. 15 mins in Reuben secured a penalty for Chopper to score, then proceeded to over power the opposition with his flare and athleticism that was complimented with good team play. Another mistake allowed Renno to tap in for our second before Reuben scored his first of two. The second half was all ours and rarely did our defense look troubled. A brace for Tricky who worked tirelessly and the impressive Josh Easty scored a brace to complete the scoring. MotM was difficult as the whole squad contributed not least Liam who enjoyed a lengthy spell bossing midfield. Another candidate was Evo who made four of five smashing tackles, but for his brace and general excellent play Josh Easty won today's accolade.
Shelfield Utd FC 13 v Whitington 0 - 14th October 2018
Another impressive performance albeit against opposition that didnt offer any resistance or threat going forward. After 30 seconds Reuben played beautifully to present Easty with a tap-in, and thereon the game as a competition was over. Another fabulous performance from the front line, and deeper with Dom and Beechy notching to support the strikers. Special notice for Bowen our wonderful keeper who played out second half and notched an impressive hatrick. Man of the match was near unanimous with Easty winning following a brilliant performance.
Shelfield Utd FC 4 - Lichfield City 2 - 21st October 2018
With players missing and the possibility of a place in the semi-final of the league cup we started cautiously against decent opposition that went 1-0 up 20 mins into an epic game. We hit back within minutes and then having gone behind again it took some fabulous defending from a combination of Bowen, Chopper, Evo, Mowey and Boulton to keep us in the game. With the first half drawing to a close we snatched a cheeky equalizer to frustrate our visitors. The second half again started cautiously and following a free kick on the edge of the box we went 3-2 ahead after a goalkeeping mistake. Again our defense was on top and with the dogged Beechy breaking up play, Renno, Easty and Dominick supported beautifully by our able subs we started to dominate and with 10 remaining Easty sealed the game and a great performance to secure a semi-final place. MotM awards to Renno and Easty are justified but the whole team, in particular performance without the ball was most pleasing.
Shelfield Utd FC 2 v Brerewood FC 5 - 4th November 2018
Again we failed to beat a better side than
us, but for most of the first half we gave a great account of our passion,
organisation and skill to take the lead and then cruelly find ourselves 1-2 at
the break. Josh Easty is in great form and following a goalkeeping mistake he
smashed the ball into the roof of the net to take a deserved lead. At the back
a combination of Bowen, Chopper, Evo and Mowey, accompanied by Tricky and Alex
at wing-back were magnificent and really played well as a defensive unit. Ahead
of them Renno, Gricey, Boulton, Dominick and Beechy gave us great protection
and whilst we didn’t overload too often, they supported the boys up top
admirably. Up top the combination of Reuben and Easty caused numerous problems
that were rewarded with a cracking toe-poke from Reuben to balance the score a
little. The boys were collectively fantastic and I really hope this is the
catalyst to beat a better side than us in the coming weeks. Four boys deservedly
received MotM votes but for a season best performance Bowen won todays accolade.
Colron FC 1 - Shelfield Utd FC 5 - 11th November 2018
Our league cup campaign came to an end with a visit to Colron that secured a top two finish to qualify for the semi-finals with a good win under difficult circumstances. Playing a 4-4-2 for the first time in anger gave us plenty of protection that limited our hosts to only a few opportunities and with some tweaks 10 mins in to the game, freed Easty up to then boss the game for the remaining 70 mins. Our first goal optimized our positive forward play with Reuben, Renno and Dominick easing Easty in to score a cracking goal as he walked the ball past the keeper. At the back a combination of Chopper, Evo, Mowey, Jack, Boulton and Bowen dominated their third with good supporting play in the middle and final thirds. Renno, Dom, Beechy and Cole combined well throughout and gave good support to our front players. Up top we were superb and a combination of ''the new Reuben'' who intelligently and unselfishly was involved in 2 of the 5 goals combined well with both Tricky and Easty. Today's MotM was awarded to Tricky who hasn't had the best start to the season but these last weeks has found form, especially yesterday where he scored 4 and was harshly denied 2 with contentious off-side decisions. Thanks to Renno for giving Bowen a 10 min striker cameo and our wonderful supporters that thankfully, and unlike me kept their cool during an at times fractious game.
Shelfield Utd FC 2 - Heat Hayes 4 - 18th November 2018
A knockout cup competition against good opposition was a step too far for our U13s who took a good but not unassailable 2-0 lead at the break, only to be run ragged in the second half to lose the game. Another excellent first half with dominant attacking football and composed defending to present Tricky with two opportunities that he converted one-on-one with the keeper. At the back we were good with a combination of Chopper, Bowen, Mowey, Evo and Boulton and again at half time we felt more than capable of getting a result. The second half again started well with Cole, Jack, Gricey supporting Renno, Dom and Beechy in midfield. Up top Easty and Reuben created a couple of chances before we succumbed to a goal following a brilliant save from Bowen. Thereon we struggled to cope with an onslaught and created very little up top which is something we need to work on over the next weeks. Were still to beat a perceived better team which is disturbing but if we can convert these excellent 50-60 minutes into excellent games we will take some bigger scalps. Beechy battled tirelessly and accompanied by Bowen in goal were awarded today's MotM.
Burntwood Dragons 2 - Shelfield Utd FC 0 - 2nd December 2018
Again against good opposition lady-luck deserted us and we found ourselves again on the end of a narrow defeat. Two injuries in the first half meant only one sub and we couldnt ask much more from the team as the gallantly defended and caused many problems that should have resulted in at least one goal. The top division against top teams is not beyond us but we need to find a way to manage games and players better. We showed signs of improvement and the boys enjoyed the occasion if not the result.
Shelfield Utd FC 3 - Penkridge 5 - 9th December 2018
Whilst the scoreline flatters our guests we must acknowledge their high qualities. Now the positives for which there was many! Easty has settled in beautifully and scored a cracking hatrick and was denied by the keeper and post. Mowey was colossus and made few mistakes in a partnership of Chopper and Evo that did concede but generally managed our opponents well. In the middle Beechy, Dominick and Renno were super and accompanied by Reuben, Alex, Johnno, Tricky and Gricey we gave ourselves a great opportunity to take a scalp. Bowen in goal made several fine saves and whilst individually we were good, at times collectively we were loose which resulted in goals against us. That said we are improving and I can see a time in the not to distant where we take something from one of the top 4 teams in the area.
Walsall Wood 2 - Shelfield Utd FC 6 - 16th December 2018
A game of two halves where for the first time in a long time we got something we didn't quite deserve. This fixture is always an event and whilst our hosts remain their accommodating selves, its clear they enjoyed their dominant first half that saw us 2-0 down. It should have been different, and had it not been for a mistake playing out from the back and a missed penalty we should have got to half time at 1-1. The second half, playing downhill and with steely determination was rewarded with some super goals from Alex, Easty and Reuben and whilst not taking anything away from these lads, the win was built on a team foundation that played beautifully. At the back Bowen kept us in the game at 0-2 that we would have struggled to come back from, Chopper, Evo and Mowey were beat only 4 or 5 times in the whole game, Beechy, Dom and Renno bossed the midfield for long parts of the game, Gricey, Tricky and Cole contributed throughout. Yes 2-6 flattered us as two of Reubens goals were ridiculous, but as we've learned recently football isn't always fair.
